John Gardner on Howard the Duck

From The Art of Fiction:
In theory it may be proper that teachers ignore thrillers, science fiction, and the comic books. No one wants Coleridge pushed from the curriculum by a duck “trapped in a world he never made!” But when we begin to list the contemporary “serious” writers who fill highschool and literature courses, Howard the Duck can look not all that bad.

Interesting comment by Gardner. I would have to say that some of the stories that I am required to teach from the 7th Grade Anthology of Literature might pale slightly in the presence of “Howard the Duck.” I’m sure my students would find “Howard” more appealing although I think that there is more serious literature available that would be better for my students. The problem is getting them interested in serious reading. I fear they are too accustomed to blowing up tanks and spraying everyone they see with their machine guns on XBox 360 or Playstation.

There’s always Fritz the Cat. That might catch their attention. Although, my preference is Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and most anything by Alan Moore.
